Social Security offices announce new hours, including Easton, Pa.

All Social Security offices, including the Easton, Pa. Social Security office, have announced new opening hours effective November 19. The Social Security offices will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. There is a 30 minute reduction each week in the office hours. Moreover, the offices will close to the public at noon every Wednesday effective from 2 January, 2013.

The reason for this short public window is to allow agency employees to continue work during regular hours without the need to work overtime. Allowing the employees to work during regular hours also prevents the cost of overtime which had become difficult for the agency to provide due to the reduced funding provided by Congress. The employees will be able to complete face-to-face interviews during these hours and will also be able to process claims in time. The significantly reduced funding provided by Congress under the continuing resolution for the first six months of the fiscal year makes it impossible for the offices to bear the cost of overtime and work to provide services to the public like they had done in the past.

Apart from the reduced opening hours, all Social Security field offices will also be closed to the public on November 23, the day after Thanksgiving. Employees will use this extra work day to reduce backlogged workloads like they did last year.

To avoid a visit to a local Social Security office, you can conveniently use their website www.socialsecurity.gov for various services, like applying for retirement, disability or Medicare benefits, applying for SSI, survivors or family benefits, replacing a Medicare card, signing up for direct deposit, obtaining a proof of income letter, estimating your retirement benefits or informing the office of a change in address or telephone number. You can even call the toll-free number 1-800-772-1213 to use their automatic telephone services to get recorded information and also to conduct some business. The telephone lines are open 24 hours a day. If you wish to talk to a Social Security representative, you can do so between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Before coming to Young, Marr & Associates, our SSD attorneys worked for the SSA which gives us an advantage over attorneys who have never dealt directly with the internal SSA system. We know the process is difficult – your job is to get better, and our job is to make sure you get the disability you deserve.
