A family is mourning the death of their little girl after a hoverboard they were charging inside their home burst into flames, burning the 4-year-old child to death.

A rescuer who rushed to the young girl’s aid was also killed after a drunk driver mowed him down as he was on his way to help the child.

An article about the tragedy that was posted by the Daily News says the hoverboard was being charged inside a Harrisburg home about 7:45 p.m. last Friday night when it burst into flames.

Three young girls were inside the house when it happened on the first floor of the home.

A photo posted to the Daily News website shows firefighters working against the flames, which looked as if they had spread to the second level and fully engulfed a portion of the house. Ashanti Hughes, 4-years-old, was badly burned as a result of the explosion.

“Dennis DeVoe, a lieutenant at the Harrisburg fire service, was at a funeral for a fallen former member of the department when the call came in,” the article reads. “As he drove to the station to grab his equipment, a teenaged drunk driver in a stolen car crashed into him and fled the scene, officials said.”

Both Hughes and Devoe spent Saturday evening in the hospital fighting for their lives, but neither of them survived to see the next day.

Hughes reportedly died Saturday morning. The Lehigh County Coroner told the media that the girl perished from burn complications.

The fire has been ruled an accident.

Fire Chief Brian Enterline made an announcement Saturday night that DeVoe, who was a 21-year veteran of the force, had also died from injuries he sustained as a result of the drunk-driving incident.

Nineteen-year-old Khanyae Kendall was arrested for the fatal crash after she showed up to a local emergency room, police said.

“She has been charged with driving under the influence, receiving stolen property, aggravated assault by vehicle and making false reports to law enforcement,” the article reads.

Four other people from the home were also hospitalized as a result of the fire, including two girls who remain in critical condition.
